The Marina At Cochiti Lake Is Gone But The Water, Wind , Waves And Wildlife Remain.

The sailing is just as good as ever... the best in the state for winds with senic views and mild temperatures April through November. It's hard to find a better place to sail in New Mexico.

It's more challenging to coordinate races and hold pot-luck barbecues without dock space to stage the events but we managed it in 2006 and no doubt we'll do it again this season. Wherever two or more sailboats are gathered there are races... and smiles... and friendship... and MSU-ing... and something is always cooking.

There will be sailboat races, parades, raft-ups and up-river cruises... and there will be pot-luck cookouts with the customary BOC Jacket-donning ceremonies. But because there is still no dock space to gather on this year to discuss plans, it is more important than ever to utilize the BOC Message Board to share your ideas and discuss plans for 2007 sailing activities. (See details HERE about accessing and using the message board).

We've rebuilt the BOC website from the ground up to make it easier for us to stay informed. We added more weather forecasting tools and NOAA weather radio. And we still have the links to the Corps of Engineers Real-Time lake levels and water flows as well as the Sun - Moon calculator. There are so many options for free photo galleries on the web these days that we're still pondering the best solution for boaters to share their pictures - but we'll get that nailed down and integrated into the site very soon. We've installed a new, more robust message board that's integrated into the website instead of being on a sperate server and we've finally registered a domain name for the site so we'll be easier to find - boatownersofcochiti.com

We've done a lot of bouncing around from place to place on the internet looking for new or better free servers in the nine years since we first went online and that has meant that we've had to change the web address about five times. Maybe we can stick to the same address now that we have our own domain name.

We know the biggest question in everyone's mind is about the progress toward getting a new marina at the lake. The only thing to report is that there IS progress being made. Talks, negotiations and plans are happening among the four concerned entities - The US Army Corps of Engineers, The Cochiti Pueblo Government, Congressman Tom Udall's office and The Boat Owners of Cochiti. The process is much slower than we'd like and many of the meetings get cancelled at the last minute but we're happy to report that there IS concern and a general concensus among the parties that a new marina is necessary and inevitable. The biggest challenge is in working out the details of how it will be funded, operated and maintained. There is no doubt this will happen, but some of us may not be around to enjoy it by the time a new marina is built. Patience and determination are the key factors in getting this done. Our gratitude goes out to Tom, Greg, Kathleen, Stephey and others who are acting on our behalf in this process.

Meanwhile, there is much sailing to be done. The dust and blue frog are doing the lion's share of it and quite frankly, they could use some help, thank you very much. There is booty aboard this ship to be shared with anyone who can catch it.

 Gone sailing,

 -the webmaster
