BOC Island
A new island has formed in the waters of Cochiti Lake near the BOC World Headquarters

Cruisin' the Rio Grande

Ever wonder what it's like upriver from Cochiti Lake? There are only two ways to find out...

1) Go up there in a watercraft.

2) Go up there in an aircraft.

3) Swim up there.

4) Ask Tom to tell you what it's like up there.

5) Do a virtual tour upriver on Google Earth.

6) Watch this slide/video show recorded last weekend (May 8th and 9th), "Cruisin' the Rio Grande".  (Windows Media Video - 7 min.)

Editor's Note: BOC Badger Reconnaissance Patrol Unit BR549 was dispatched to Cochit Lake boat ramp today (Cinco de Mayo) to report on the safety hazards causing closure of the ramp. Here's what he found... the ramp has become unsafe because vandals (possibly badgers) have been throwing rocks at the rangers foreclosing the ramp.

Cochiti Lake Level On The Rise - Spring 2010
Saturday, 24 April 2010

The water level at Cochiti Lake is on the rise. Engineer Don Gallegos of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Albuquerque District Office says the water level is being raised at Cochiti Lake to allow for a higher river flow through the middle of June as the extra water is released. The higher river flow helps the silvery minnow survive as well as simulating the natural spring floods that help rejuvenate the Rio Grande riverbed and bosque areas. Gallegos shared a chart of the forecast/plan for the Cochiti Lake water level rise and fall as this plan is carried out.

Projected Water Levels for Cochiti Lake - Spring 2010

The maximum surface elevation planned at the peak of this holdback is 5357.6 ft. MSL which is approximately 15 feet higher than the normal recreation pool level. Gallegos said that the spring runoff and snowpack this year is about 90% of normal so they do not expect the lake to rise further than planned for the holdback. The higher level will be held steady for approximately 12 days before the flood release level is begun. From the forecast chart this should coincide with the first half of May. After that time the water level will slowly recede, reaching the normal recreational pool level around the middle of June.

In May and June of 2005 a 150% winter snowpack caused the Corps of Engineers to hold water in the lake to prevent flooding downstream. That year the lake level reached a peak of 5364 ft. MSL. For boaters this was a mixed blessing... the higher water allowed deep keel boats to go upriver as far as Frijoles Canyon at Bandalier as well as transit through the Santa Fe channel on the east side of the lake. Bland Canyon was easily accessible for at least a month. The downside is that the lake levels covered the public recreation areas and bathroom facilities on shore, there was more floating debris in the lake and there were more things along the new shoreline just under the surface that can be hazards for boats and motors. Pictures from the high water days in 2005 can be found in the BOC Photo Gallery HERE.

In May - June of 2007 a 10 ft. rise in the lake level allowed access to Bland Canyon and slightly beyond. Several BOC boaters made excursions upriver and an overnight raft-up and BBQ was held in Bland Canyon. That should also be possible for the first two or three weeks of May this year. The terrain and wildlife upriver from Cochiti Lake is pristine and beautiful and the rare chance to get up there in a sailboat is a great opportunity - don't miss it.

Spring is HERE... time to launch!
Spring is HERE... time to launch!

Just when we were beginning to get really impatient, wondering what's taking our webdaddy so long to launch the Sailing Spring with a bright and inspiring article, when we know the ice is gone and quantities of sailors were actually sighted at the recent businesslike meeting, your correspondent gets a little note suggesting she write a little something.  This sort of thing will doubtless happen on Big Blue, where the hapless passenger nearest the tiller will morph unawares into helmsman/helmsmam.

We picture all the other, good, sailors shaking the birds and nests out of the furled sails, polishing hulls, dealing with those complicated fiberglass holes and cracks and chips, replacing rubrails, vacuuming and swabbing the cabin and cockpit, seeing what really is in all those lockers and compartments, the ones under the cushions in the V-berth.  And the motor: what about that?  And are there enough corkscrews, and do we really need fourteen beach-theme plastic glasses?

Your correspondent certainly will get some of those jobs done too, usually by, or during, the last gathering of the summer.

What's going on in the hulls?
What's going on in the hulls?

And all this has to be done SOON because in ABOUT TWO WEEKS: MAY FIRST!!!, we have to tie up to the Great HQ Ship and get busy brightening her up.  And see what's going on in the hulls.
